May through September, per the official trail guidance, with September standing out for the North York Moors heather at its peak and thinner crowds than midsummer.
This is a lower-level trail, moorland and clifftop rather than mountain, so it stays walkable year-round, but winter mud on the coastal sections and short daylight make it a much harder sell than spring to autumn. The Vale of York (Helmsley end) and the Yorkshire Wolds (Filey end) are both comparatively dry by English standards; the coast and moor-top themselves run cooler, windier and more overcast than either inland figure suggests, particularly under a sea fret. September is the standout month, combining the heather at its best with quieter resort towns after the school holidays. Seasonal cafes and campsites along the coast shut from around late October to March, while the resort towns, Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, keep enough open year-round that you will not go hungry. The trail itself never closes.
Month-by-month guide
January
Poor
Short days and, per the official trail guidance, the coastal sections are at their muddiest of the year now.
7 (Vale of York/Helmsley end) / 6 (Yorkshire Wolds/Filey end)°C high · 0-1°C low · 8.0Watch for: Under 8 hours of daylight; the moorland crossing between Kildale and Margrove Park has nothing open along the way, which matters more when the day is already short.
February
Poor
Same winter character as January, muddy coastal path, cold, quiet, though daylight is stretching out by month's end.
8 (inland) / 6 (Wolds)°C high · 0-1°C low · 9.9Watch for: Daylight still under 10 hours.
March
Mixed
Daylight is back to a normal working length and rainfall is easing, but the coastal path is often still carrying winter mud and the moor is still wet.
10 (inland) / 9 (Wolds)°C high · 2°C low · 11.9
April
Good
Rain eases, days are long enough for the bigger moorland stages, and Easter brings seasonal campsites and cafes back.
Long daylight, dry ground, and the official recommended season begins now and runs through autumn.
16 (inland) / 15 (Wolds)°C high · 6°C low · 16.1Watch for: Sea fret (locally the North Yorkshire term for cold coastal fog off the North Sea) becomes possible from now through late summer, most likely when the land is warm and the sea is still cold. It can drop visibility on the clifftop with little warning even on an otherwise sunny inland day.
June
Excellent
The longest days of the year and generally settled weather, though this is also when sea fret is most likely.
19 (inland) / 17 (Wolds)°C high · 9°C low · 17.3Watch for: Sea fret can roll in on the coastal sections with little notice; the optional low-tide beach walk between Robin Hood's Bay and Boggle Hole (the clifftop Cleveland Way route is always open as the all-tide alternative) needs a tide check before relying on it.
July
Excellent
Warm and long-lit; school summer holidays start toward the end of the month and noticeably lift both crowds and prices in the resort towns.
21 (inland) / 20 (Wolds)°C high · 11°C low · 16.8Watch for: Sea fret remains possible on the coast; Scarborough and Filey get properly busy with holidaymakers, which changes the character of those two stage-ends more than the walking itself.
August
Good
Warm with long days still, and the moorland heather starts flowering from around mid-month, but this is peak English holiday season in the resort towns and grouse shooting begins on the moor.
21 (inland) / 20 (Wolds)°C high · 11°C low · 15.0Watch for: Grouse shooting season opens on 12 August and runs into early winter; on the open moorland sections a shoot in progress can mean a short wait or a directed line, though rights of way stay open. Sea fret is still possible early in the month.
September
Excellent
The heather is at its best across the North York Moors sections and crowds drop off sharply once school holidays end, while the weather is still generally mild.
18 (inland) / 17 (Wolds)°C high · 9-10°C low · 12.8Watch for: Grouse shooting continues, as August.
October
Mixed
Still mild by the numbers, but rain is picking up, days are shortening fast, and the coastal path starts carrying more mud again toward the end of the month.
14 (inland) / 13 (Wolds)°C high · 6-7°C low · 10.6Watch for: Grouse shooting season ends 10 December but is largely over by now in practice; check locally if relevant.
November
Poor
Short days and, per the official trail guidance, the coastal sections are muddy again from here through winter.
10 (inland) / 9 (Wolds)°C high · 3-4°C low · 8.6Watch for: Under 9 hours of daylight.
December
Poor
The shortest days of the year and the muddiest coastal walking.
7 (inland) / 6 (Wolds)°C high · 0-1°C low · 7.4Watch for: Under 8 hours of daylight caps how far any stage can realistically go.
