Getting to the start
The National Trail's own advice: fly into Leeds Bradford (LBA), Manchester (MAN) or Newcastle (NCL), travel to York (CRS: YRK) by train/coach, then take the daily bus on to Helmsley (exact operator/route not itemised by the trail's own page, and not independently re-verified here). By rail, the nearest mainline station is Thirsk (CRS: THI, on the East Coast Main Line), about 10 miles/16km from Helmsley with no simple direct weekday bus -- most people taxi the final leg. There is no railway station in Helmsley itself.
Leaving the finish
Filey has its own railway station (CRS: FIL) with year-round Northern/TransPennine services, about a 20–25-minute walk from the actual trail end at Filey Brigg/Country Park Car Park. The East Yorkshire 'Coaster' bus (12/12A/12C) also runs along the coast to Scarborough and on to Bridlington, year-round including Sundays.
The one-way journey
A strictly linear inland-to-coast trail with no dedicated car-relocation service found. Unlike the neighbouring Coast to Coast, there is no baggage-transfer operator here offering a car park plus shuttle package to solve the one-way problem -- the two operators found (Sherpa Van, Brigantes) move bags but not people. In practice this means most walkers either use public transport at both ends (Thirsk/York in, Filey out -- both have year-round rail) rather than driving, or leave a car at the purpose-adjacent Cleveland Way Car Park in Helmsley and return to it by train/bus/taxi via Filey-Scarborough-York-Thirsk after finishing -- noting that car park's own published tariff is a daily rate rather than a confirmed weekly product .
If you need to leave the trail early
The trail runs close to a public transport option along nearly its whole length: the East Yorkshire 128 (Scarborough-Pickering-Helmsley, daily but Sunday services stop short at Pickering) near the start; Moorsbus (Saturdays/Sundays/bank holidays only, 3 Apr-27 Sep 2026) across the inland Moors section near Osmotherley/Clay Bank; the Esk Valley Line (daily, year-round) near Kildale; Saltburn, Whitby and Scarborough stations, all directly on the route; and the Coaster 12/13 and X93/X94 buses (both year-round) along the final coastal third. The one genuinely thin stretch is the inland Moors crossing outside Moorsbus's Saturday/Sunday/bank-holiday operating pattern -- on an ordinary midweek day between Osmotherley and Kildale, a taxi from Great Ayton, Stokesley or Northallerton is the realistic option rather than a bus.
Useful access hubs
RailThirsk railway station
The nearest mainline (East Coast Main Line) station to Helmsley, about 10 miles/16km away. There is no simple direct weekday bus from Thirsk to Helmsley -- through journeys typically change at York or Easingwold -- so most walkers taxi the last leg.
Trains year-round; the local bus connection is limited on weekdays and not confirmed on Sundays.RailYork railway station
The National Trail's own advice for anyone flying into Leeds Bradford, Manchester or Newcastle is to reach York first, then take 'the daily bus through to Helmsley' (a local Yorkshire-area service via Easingwold rather than a Coastliner-branded route).
Not confirmed as running every day of the week -- described only as 'the daily bus' by the trail's own site, without a source giving exact days.RailMiddlesbrough railway station
Western end of the Esk Valley Line (Northern), which runs through Battersby, Kildale and Great Ayton -- all close to where the Cleveland Way passes Kildale and Captain Cook's Monument (chainage ~62-70km).
Daily, year-round (runs every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day).RailSaltburn railway station
The trail runs directly through Saltburn-by-the-Sea (chainage ~89km) -- the station is in the town itself, no onward transfer needed.
Year-round Northern service towards Middlesbrough/Darlington.RailWhitby railway station
The trail passes directly through Whitby (chainage ~122km, coincident with Coast to Coast's finish approach) -- no onward transfer needed. Ticket office Mon-Sat 08:30-16:00, closed Sundays.
Esk Valley Line trains run daily, year-round.RailScarborough railway station
The trail passes directly through Scarborough (chainage ~159km) -- no onward transfer needed.
Year-round.RailFiley railway station
At the finish itself; roughly a 20–25-minute walk (or short local bus/taxi) to the Country Park Car Park at Filey Brigg, where the trail actually ends.
Year-round Northern/TransPennine services towards Scarborough/Hull/Sheffield.AirportLeeds Bradford Airport
Per the National Trail's own guidance: travel to York first (bus/taxi/rail connections from the airport), then the daily bus on to Helmsley. For the Filey end, reverse via York/Scarborough.
Year-round; onward bus/rail links as noted above. Sources and research notes · 17 sources
