The source-to-Oxford section is a resupply problem; below Oxford, towns become frequent and London removes the constraint. The Perch at Binsey publishes a vegan menu, Tide Tables at Richmond confirms vegan dishes, and Mallow in Borough Market is fully plant-based. Above Oxford, start each day with food and do not depend on an unconfirmed riverside pub.

Practical vegan planning
Local food worth trying
At Greenwich, Goddards lists a veggie soya pie with mash; ask staff to confirm the liquor or gravy and current ingredients. Newens at Kew develops plant-based baking but asks for 24 hours' notice for a vegan reservation or takeaway. London cask beer needs a fining check. Historic watercress sites and brewery locations are not food recommendations.
What to buy
Cricklade and Lechlade are the key upper-river shops, then Oxford provides a full reset. Below Oxford, Thames Valley towns are frequent; from Kingston the route is urban. Co-op's current vegan range is Co-op Plant Based and Waitrose's is PlantLiving, but branch stock varies. Above Oxford carry breakfast, lunch and a cold dinner built from wraps, beans or hummus, nuts and fruit.
Good places on the trail
Upper river: Lynwood & Co in Lechlade is only a directory lead, so use the town's shops rather than depending on its menu. Oxford: The Perch at Binsey publishes a vegan menu. The Punter is no longer a safe vegetarian recommendation because its current operator page makes no such claim and newer reports describe a changed menu. Reading: Vegivores in Caversham says it is fully plant-based, one bridge from the route. Windsor: Other Space Arts is listed by the destination authority as fully plant-based. Richmond: Tide Tables confirms vegetarian food with vegan dishes directly under the bridge. Central London: Mallow's operator describes it as fully plant-based. Greenwich: Goddards' menu includes a soya pie, with ingredients to confirm at the counter. Riverside Vegetaria in Kingston closed in 2024 and should not be used from older guides.
Trail treats
Book Newens' plant-based baking in advance if it matters to the day. In London, choose a product explicitly marked vegan rather than assuming traditional pie, pastry or ice cream is suitable.
Where to restock
Downstream, shop in Cricklade and especially Lechlade for the quiet upper river, then reset in Oxford. From Reading onward, carry for the day rather than several stages. Upstream, buy in Oxford before the rural final section and use Lechlade and Cricklade. Pub opening and menus change, so keep one cold meal above Oxford even when a village appears to have a kitchen.
Things that may not be vegan
Check suet or butter in pie pastry, dairy in mash, animal stock in gravy or liquor, shared fryers and isinglass in cask ale. A historic vegetarian listing may no longer reflect the current business.
