Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the Peddars Way

The route is thin in shops but unusually well served by current pub menus. The Olde Windmill at Great Cressingham confirms two vegan mains, Wittles at Castle Acre publishes a vegan menu, the Cartshed at Great Massingham marks vegan items, and the King William IV at Sedgeford marks a main, sides and dessert. Check Wittles before the walk because the business is being sold.

What to expect

The route is thin in shops but unusually well served by current pub menus. The Olde Windmill at Great Cressingham confirms two vegan mains, Wittles at Castle Acre publishes a vegan menu, the Cartshed at Great Massingham marks vegan items, and the King William IV at Sedgeford marks a main, sides and dessert. Check Wittles before the walk because the business is being sold.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

Order the dishes actually marked vegan on current menus: vegetable curry or lentil chilli at the Olde Windmill, and the vegan menu at Wittles. At the northern end, ask East Coast Gelato what is labelled dairy-free and vegan that day. Norfolk potatoes, asparagus or beer are not vegan evidence by themselves; preparation and fining still matter.

What to buy

Shop in Thetford before reaching Knettishall Heath. Castle Acre's Budgens is the central reset, Massingham Stores confirms plant-based alternatives, and Ringstead General Store is the final shop before the coast. Carry plant milk, bread, beans or hummus, nuts and a no-cook dinner. Swaffham provides a larger off-route shop if a Castle Acre stage allows the detour.

Good places on the trail

Thompson: the Chequers' current menu marks one vegan main and says other dishes may be adapted. Great Cressingham: the Olde Windmill marks vegetable curry and lentil chilli suitable for vegans and is the key meal on the southern half. Castle Acre: Wittles publishes a separate vegan menu for breakfast and lunch, but its owners are selling the business, so confirm it is still trading. The Ostrich states that vegan options and breakfast are available but publishes no working menu. Great Massingham: the Cartshed marks vegan items and plant milks; the Dabbling Duck does not mark vegan food and states that chips use beef dripping. Sedgeford: the King William IV marks a vegan main, sides and dessert. Ringstead: the Gin Trap marks vegan starters, sides and dessert but no main, so request one ahead. Holme: the White Horse dining menu offers no marked vegan dish; ask at its bakery.

Trail treats

Use the Cartshed or King William's items marked vegan. At the coast, choose gelato only when the specific flavour is labelled vegan.

Where to restock

Northbound, start with a full shop in Thetford, reset at Castle Acre and detour to Massingham Stores before the long northern section. Ringstead is the last general store before Holme. Southbound, shop in Hunstanton or Ringstead, then Castle Acre, and carry through to Thetford. Meal hours are narrow and villages often have one kitchen, so phone that morning and keep an emergency dinner.

Things that may not be vegan

The Dabbling Duck states that its chips use beef dripping. Elsewhere, if shared oil matters, ask when you order. Check dairy in pastry or mash, stock in soup and honey in breakfast toppings. A dish that reads plant-based is not confirmed until the kitchen marks or explains it.
