What to expect

Newcastle and Carlisle are easy; the central Wall and Solway need planning. The King's Arms at Bowness-on-Solway confirms vegan meals cooked to order and says booking is essential. The Milecastle Inn has useful vegan walker reports but no equivalent operator menu. Contact central accommodation before arrival and leave Carlisle with food for the finish.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

A pease-pudding stottie is vegan only if the pease pudding itself was cooked without ham and the bread and spread are vegan; removing visible ham is not enough. Vegan haggis is available in the region, but check the mash. Fentimans labels its ginger beer vegan and is a local packaged drink. Treat Greggs' vegan-labelled products as convenient town food, not rural resupply.

What to buy

Buy preferred food in Newcastle, Hexham or Carlisle. Small Co-op and Spar branches are top-ups, and Co-op's current national range is called Co-op Plant Based. A sound carry is wraps, hummus or beans, nut butter, fruit, oat milk and one cold dinner. Hexham has the strongest mid-route shop choice. Carry plant milk if breakfast matters, because rural hosts may cater for vegan food without stocking it.

Good places on the trail

Newcastle: The Ship Inn, Snackwallah and several city-centre cafes are established vegan leads, but check each operator's current trading format before building the first day around one. Central Wall: a vegan walker who phoned ahead reports a full vegan meal at the Milecastle Inn, with separate HappyCow reports of several vegan mains. This is useful likely evidence, not an operator guarantee. Twice Brewed says it caters for dietary requirements but does not publish a vegan dish, so request the exact meal when booking. Greenhead and Gilsland kitchens are also unknown from current operator pages. Hexham: use the town's shops; Small World Cafe and several Indian kitchens are secondary vegan leads. Carlisle: The Last Zebra, Foxes and Cakes and Ale have recent vegan reports but need a current-menu check. Bowness-on-Solway: the King's Arms operator confirms vegan meals cooked to order and says booking is essential.

Trail treats

Choose products explicitly labelled vegan at Newcastle or Carlisle bakeries. Fentimans ginger beer is operator-labelled vegan. Do not assume a regional cake or ordinary bakery pastry is suitable.

Where to restock

East to west, shop in Newcastle, top up in Hexham, then carry lunch and an emergency dinner across the central Wall. Bardon Mill has a village store, but its range is limited. Carlisle is the full reset for the Solway section; buy through to Bowness unless the King's Arms has confirmed your meal. West to east, start with the same Solway carry and use Carlisle before the rural middle.

Things that may not be vegan

Ask how pease pudding was cooked, not just whether ham can be removed. Check butter in mash and pastry, meat stock in soup and gravy, shared fryers, and isinglass in cask ale. A general promise to handle dietary requirements is not a confirmed vegan meal.
